Syllabus for ESL 1-4



Welcome to ESL 1 at Arvada West HS! This is going to be a successful year, and you will learn a lot of English in the process. This syllabus is designed to help you understand what is expected of you during the class and to inform you about what we will be studying this year.


Classroom Procedures and Policies

There are three rules in our classroom:  Respect, Responsibility, and Integrity.


Course Description

This elective course is designed primarily for students who are in the early beginning stages of English language development. The emphasis is on developing basic conversational speaking and listening as well as beginning reading and writing skills with a focus on content area English.  



We will be using the VISIONS textbooks (blue level) as well as Shining Star Level A (the red book), all of which provide systematic language development as well as literacy instruction.

You will need to bring the following materials to class every day:

ESL 1:

  • a spiral notebook
  • a pen
  • lined loose leaf paper
  • Chromebook (charged for class)




I use this grading scale at Green Mountain High School.  Your quarterly grades are calculated as follows:


A = 90 - 100%      Student shows advanced understanding of the subject matter.

B = 80 - 89%        Student is proficient to advanced in their understanding of the subject matter.

C = 70 - 79%        Student is sometimes proficient in their understanding of the subject matter.

D = 60 - 69%        Student is partially proficient in their understanding of the subject matter.

F = 59%                 Student shows an unsatisfactory understanding of the subject matter.
