Hello Wildcats and Families,

Hopefully everyone had a restful President’s Day holiday.  As today’s snowflakes fall, we are still continuing to see the possibilities for change and renewal that hopefully indicates that Spring is on the way.

As a district, Jeffco continues to explore when we are able to return to 100% in-person learning. As the COVID numbers continue to drop and vaccinations continue to be more widespread, the school district is interested in your feedback on this process.

Each school is being asked to provide feedback from all stakeholders to some of the district plans under consideration for returning to 100% in person learning.  Please take a few minutes to review the brief slideshow listed in the top of the survey and then take this survey no later than by noon on Friday so we can give our Arvada West feedback to the district.  To also gather feedback, we will have a virtual town hall meeting for interested families on Thursday at 6 pm to answer questions.  The links are below.

Students, you will be given time to complete the survey in the 5th hour tomorrow, so you can take the survey then.  (Please just take it one time per person. )

In other news, please see the other happenings around school this week included here.

Stay warm, Wildcats!

February 10, 2021

Dear Wildcats and Families,

As we head into this long weekend, I just wanted to take the chance to thank our students and families for their continued support and understanding during these difficult times.  Things continue to change and as a school, we are trying to be adaptive and flexible.  Our teachers are working hard to create thoughtful lessons and work through a curriculum in a limited time frame.  All I can ask of our students is to engage in the learning, seek the necessary support to ensure they understand concepts and be kind to themselves and others.  Fridays are always an option for students to ask for one-on-one support from their teachers and come into the building to complete assignments or work with support.

Our first benchmark grade reports come out this Friday, February 12th at 3:00 p.m. to help inform students and parents of their progress in classes.  While we do not have an assigned date and time for parent conferences for this progress period, our teachers are available for conversations regarding students' progress.  Please reach out to schedule a phone call or virtual chat so we can all keep our students on track.

As we continue to get back into a normal routine and address curricular and school wide issues, I have formed an Equity Task Force to take a look at our practices and protocols that may reduce the feeling of inclusion and belonging in our school and community.  Our first meeting will take place on February 17th at 2:00 p.m.  If a student has an interest in serving on this task force, please email me at Geree.Santarelli@jeffco.k12.co.us and we can determine next steps.  I very much look forward to this work to build a better community based upon the belief that a student who feels welcomed and a sense of belonging to their school and community is more successful.

Another sign of returning normalcy, our traditional Wish Week is in full swing, and approaching its goal quickly.   The winter sports season is also well underway and starting this Friday, parents will be welcomed into the gymnasium to watch sporting events under some strict guidelines.  Please see the information pertaining to these protocols below.  We are excited to have our parents in to cheer on our Wildcats!

Enjoy this long weekend (remember: no school Friday and Monday) and on Valentine’s Day, take a moment to show appreciation for those that make your day brighter just by being in it.

Hello Wildcats and Families,

As school continues, we are returning to our spring activities and traditions.  Wish Week is around the corner, sports have returned and live streaming of our upcoming games is available. Please join us in thanking our counselors for a job well done for National Counseling Week.  Today was also a special day at Arvada West -- we hosted a “letter of intent” signing day for our scholar athletes who are committing to play collegiate athletics.   Congratulations to those seniors!

Please know that our school continues to work hard to return to the in person learning that is so essential for our students.  We will continue to reach out and try to engage our students in learning.   Please continue to reach out to your student’s counselor or administrator with any concerns or questions.

Sincerely,

Hello Wildcats and Wildcat Families,

It is so great to see all our students back in the building!  While school started back on the 5th, this week felt like the first week of the semester.   Thanks to our wonderful student council students for their terrific Wildcat Welcome.  The halls have never looked better - full of spirit and Purple Pride.

All our students are doing a wonderful job of following all COVID protocols.  Thanks for helping to keep our school open by following the public health requirements.

This week we are returning to some of our traditions (a wonderful musical production coming up this spring) and creating new ones (boys lacrosse!).  Thanks to all who are thinking so creatively and adapting our school events and sports to fit our ever-changing world.

As we settle into our routine of returning to in-person learning, we are also renewing our commitment to ensuring that our learning is engaging, active and preparing our students for their next steps in life. Please continue to reach out and let us know how we can support your students along this journey.

Have a great week, Wildcats!

January 20, 2021

Hello Wildcats and Wildcat families,

We are so excited to welcome our in-person students back in just a few short days.  We have definitely missed the energy in our building that students bring and look forward to seeing your smiling faces.

As we transition back into this hybrid model, many of our procedures and protocols will remain the same from first semester.  Just a few additional reminders are highlighted below in the newsletter.  Most importantly, gaiters will no longer be acceptable as a face covering.  We have masks available for students if they do not have one.  Most importantly, please do not come to school if you are feeling unwell.  All doors that were open for temperature checks will remain the same as the first semester.  Make sure to give yourself time to go through the process and get to class on time.

For our students who will remain hybrid for the remainder of the semester, nothing will really change for you.  Continue to log into your classes daily and meet with your teachers.  Please remember if your teacher has designated pick-up materials that will help you in engaging in the class, those materials are available for pick-up during school hours at the main office doors.  These materials have been purchased and organized as an integral part of your success in classes.  Please make a point to acquire these materials as soon as possible.

Returning to Hybrid Learning MONDAY

Beginning on Monday, we are returning to the Hybrid learning schedule.

Please review the schedule listed here:  Bell Schedule

If you have questions about your student’s Hybrid/Remote status please contact your student’s counselor.

Currently our Remote and Hybrid classes are at max capacity and there is very little/no room for further adjustments.  Our current staffing was based off of the feedback that we received from previous surveys in the 1st Semester. If your student is a Remote student they may be placed in a Hybrid class due to these restraints.

Safety First

The safety of your student(s) is our number one priority here at Arvada West.  Due to COVID-19 we have implemented several new protocols that will ensure Arvada West is a safe place for your student.

We have seven different entry doors that students will enter through, to stagger the number of students entering at the same time.  Students will enter through assigned doors closest to their first class period of the day. A list of doors and classrooms will be sent out next week.   Students may enter the building at 7:00 a.m. and go straight to class.  Students whose first class of the day is 3rd or 4th may enter the building beginning at 9:00 a.m. through the assigned doors.  Students who are arriving late to school, or have a later start will need to enter either the main entrance doors or pre-function doors to be screened.

Students that do not have a class will not be allowed to be in the building.

Our hallways are clearly marked to keep traffic moving in a fluid manner.  Students need to follow the signs posted in the hallways.  Three of our stairways allow for two way traffic and five that are clearly marked will be one way traffic only.  In order to keep social distancing students need to keep moving, small groups congregating in the hallway will be asked to separate and to head to class.

The classrooms have been cleared of non-essential items, extra desks, chairs, etc. to allow for more space to ensure that social distancing can be maintained.  Desks will be sanitized after each class period and seating will be staggered throughout the day so different desks are used each hour.

Students are encouraged to wash their hands thoroughly throughout the day.  Hand sanitizer is provided in each classroom as well as at each entry door for students to use.  Students are to keep their hands to themselves and are not allowed to share any materials with other students.

Masks must be worn by students at all times.  If a student does not have a mask, AWHS will provide one  for the day, a reminder that a bandana is not considered a face covering.  As long as social distancing of 6 feet or more is maintained students can take a short (5 minute or less) break from wearing a mask.  Masks are mandatory in the hallways.

AWHS will be offering Grab and Go breakfast and lunch options.  For breakfast students may pick up food in the Commons and eat their meal in their first class of the day.  Lunch will be served at the end of the day, students can pick up their meal as they are leaving the building.

Students that do not have a class will not be allowed to be in the building.  At the end of the school day students need to depart the building and be off school grounds by 2:00.  Students needing to meet with a teacher after school must make arrangements with the teacher prior to arriving.  Once students leave campus they are not allowed to reenter the building.

Building Entry

Students will be allowed to enter the building beginning at 7:00 a.m. each morning, if they have a first or second period class.  Upon entering the building, students must be wearing a mask, maintain six feet of social distance, will be asked symptom questions and have a temperature taken.

Entry into the building will be staggered and based on a student’s first class of attendance for the day.  We ask that students enter the building at the doors indicated below.  Each door is labelled directly above the door. Once in the building, students will need to go directly to their first classroom of the day.

Door numbers 4, 8 and Main Entrance are accessible from the South Parking lot.  These doors are on the south side of the building facing Allendale Drive.  If you park in the North lot you will need to make your way around the building, to the south entrances.

Doors 21, 23 and 32 can be accessed from the North (Student) Parking Lot. These doors should be utilized only for students with a first assigned class in the North Wing.

January 13, 2021

Hello Wildcats and Families,

At this point in January, your student should be feeling comfortable and in the swing of things for this semester.  I hope your student has settled into the routine of each synchronous day and managing their time well so that Fridays do not feel overwhelming.

January’s short days and the remote teaching environment can put stress on your students, but please know that we do have many resources available here to support you.  One, in particular, is our partnership with the Jefferson Center, and the services of Dr. Sharon Stremel.  Also, our prevention counselor Kelly Smith, our social workers Lexi Evans and Scarlett Doise as well as all our counseling staff are here to support the educational and emotional needs of our students.  Please reach out, we will do our best to help.

Seniors, in particular, who may have failed classes critical for graduation this spring should reach out to their counselor to establish a plan and investigate our credit recovery options.  There are several roads that all lead to GRADUATION so please make sure you are taking advantage of every opportunity to make that a reality.  Wildcats, you CAN do this!

And for our underclassmen, it is ALREADY time to explore your options for classes for next year!  Please see the information below about counseling’s program on getting started on registration for next year.  It has great information that will help you through the process.

Juniors, SAT testing is on the horizon too.  Please take advantage of the practice test offering coming later this month -- it will give you good experience and confidence for the SAT later this spring.

Parents and students, we also have links included for your student for the district’s Make Your Voice Heard Survey.  MYVH is a survey designed to promote engagement in school, improves the school learning environment, and combats problems such as bullying.  Arvada West High School will be giving students the survey in January-February 2021. This annual survey gives us great feedback on Arvada West.  Your student’s input is welcomed, please have your student follow the directions below and participate in MYVH today.

And enjoy the upcoming three day weekend!  Please note the schedule change below.

As we continue to navigate the school semester, our Wildcat resilience and strength will continue to be important skills to hold close.  Keep your focus.  Don’t put off that homework - homework strengthens your skillset by “practicing” your learning.  Keep practicing.  Keep asking questions.  Keep reaching out to your teachers, to your counselors, and to your administrators.  And most importantly, keep your positive Wildcat attitude.  #WildcatStrong.  Spring semester 2021.  You got this.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Geree Santarelli

Principal

Placement of students is based upon the availability of Credit Recovery courses. Students will be expected to replace one of their off-hours for the Credit Recovery Course. These courses are done through a program called Edgenuity and students will have 6 weeks to complete a Credit Recovery course. Happy New Year Wildcats!

I am hoping this communication finds you rested, relaxed and ready to tackle a new semester. Much has been learned from the previous semesters of remote learning and as a school we are adjusting a few things to help everyone be more successful and engaged in the learning. To be successful we know that it takes all parties, students, parents and the school to ensure a successful experience. If any of these parties do not uphold their end of the educational tripod, it begins to tip and eventually fail. As a school we have created common practice throughout the school on the organization of course content in Schoology, attendance practices and a late work policy. With these new common practices we are hoping for a more consistent experience and accountability for our students. Below you will find more information regarding these common practices.

Although our failure rate for this first semester was 11%, which is 4% higher than normal, we consider the decrease from the first semester’s second six weeks grading period of 21.7%, a success. The consistent efforts of parents, students and teachers working to create opportunities for successful demonstration of proficiency is a testament to the old adage, “it takes a village”. I would encourage all students and parents to continue to monitor grades and attendance and focus on keeping up with the workload in order to achieve the desired outcome.

One thing I think we all know is that procrastination is not our friend and can quickly overwhelm our efforts. I know I have heard many times that Fridays for many of our students can appear overwhelming, as many teachers have their work due at the end of the day. But in many cases what is happening is work that has been assigned all week is being left to Friday to complete leading to that sense of an excessive workload. Teachers will be working with students throughout the semester on more “soft skills”, such as time management, project management and self-advocacy. We believe that these efforts combined with new common practices will increase engagement and success.

Let’s keep a forward focus and make 2021 a much better year than before. A big round of applause to all of our Wildcats who continue to persevere through these unprecedented challenges and make us all Wildcat Proud.

As always if you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

December 16, 2020

Dear Wildcats and families,

Thank you so much to all the parents and students who have given such great feedback on your experiences with the first semester and remote learning.  Your comments and suggestions will continue to drive our planning and staff development for next semester.

These unprecedented times have given us a new perspective on student learning and engagement.   Your feedback and partnership continues to be critical as we move forward into 2021.   As we begin next semester, you will see from us a renewed focus on ways to make sure your students are as engaged in remote learning as if they were sitting in their desks at Arvada West.  Public health guidelines will dictate our eventual return to the classroom, but we are committed to do all we can as educators to strengthen our remote processes in order to bring more of the classroom to you.    Students will need to continue to do their part as well by engaging in online learning, working to connect with their teachers and classmates, and staying positive.

As we move into our break, I highly encourage all my students, staff and parents to take a much needed break from screen time.  Unplug this season and give yourselves a respite from the screen.  Let’s enjoy the company of family and friends, spend time outdoors, play a board or card game and eat lots of good food.  We will soon be back into the grind of the new semester so take some time to enjoy the season and recharge your batteries.

Remember to finish #WildcatStrong!  YOU GOT THIS!!

December 9, 2020

Dear Wildcats and Families,

We know this has been a hard year for all of us.  We are sooo close to having this year behind us, and things look promising for our plans to return to some sense of normalcy next year.

But the fact remains that we still need to finish what we’ve started this year academically.

We all understand that one of the most difficult things about COVID is how remote learning and restricting social interaction has weighed so heavily on our students, families and our staff.  Shifting between in and out of classrooms, going fully remote, and suspending many of our school traditions has been so demotivating to our students-and right now that is reflected in student grades as an abundance of failing grades.

The staff at AWest has come up with a plan that we hope will give all our students an opportunity to “show what you know”.

For the week of December 14-18 Arvada West will hold this time as “proficiency week”.   Classes will continue, students should still be attending all remote classes.  This means that this week we will be focusing on students completing back assignments and working on ways to demonstrate their level of understanding of the material. Teachers will be working on allowing students to show proficiency in a variety of manners.  This does not mean it is a finals week, and the only way to assess a student’s level of understanding is through a test.  Failing students should have a chance to demonstrate their level of understanding in a variety of ways, per teacher discretion or complete necessary work to attain a passing grade.  This is still a Monday-Thursday synchronous/Friday asynchronous week.  With a focus on getting students to demonstrate a passing level of proficiency.

Our teachers know that all our Wildcats CAN and DO know more about their subject matter than is reflected right now in the gradebook.   Students whose level of understanding is not reflected in their grade must make a concerted effort to reach out to their teachers and ask what needs to be done in order to demonstrate proficiency. The main office staff has been contacting students and parents over the last week to encourage them to engage and complete necessary work to pass.

Nothing is beyond hope if you dig deep and give it one last effort, Wildcats.  Proficiency Week is an opportunity to demonstrate your learning.  Let’s get to it and finish strong!  Let’s all feel that Wildcat Pride, for a job well done.

Important Information - NEW -  Proficiency Week

December 14th-18th will become a “proficiency”  week.  This means that this week we will be seeking ways for students to demonstrate their level of understanding. Teachers will be working on allowing students to show proficiency in a variety of manners.  This does not mean it is a finals week, and the only way to assess their level of understanding is through a test.  Failing students should have a chance to demonstrate their level of understanding in a variety of ways, per teacher discretion, or complete necessary work to attain a passing grade.  This is still a Monday-Thursday synchronous/Friday asynchronous week and students should attend all classes as scheduled.  The week will focus on getting students to demonstrate a passing level of proficiency.

Student Engagement teams (admin, counselors, secretaries) will be helping to make phone calls to try and get students in the building or schedule a one-on-one time with the teacher to attain additional support.  The Engagement team is making contacts and encouraging you and your students to contact your teachers to schedule a time to ask for help and find out what can be done to demonstrate proficiency in your class.  Reach out to your counselor with any additional questions or support needs.

Support Days  Friday, Monday, and Tuesday ( December 18th, 21st, 22nd) will be days to support students, gather end of semester feedback from students, and tie up loose ends.  This gives students and teachers another opportunity to get that last bit of extra support to get to passing.  Students are allowed in the building during this time if they make advance appointments with their teachers and if the protocols are followed (small numbers, temp checked through security at main office desk).   Students will be sent a  survey to gather feedback on the semester.

 First Semester Grades

First Semester Grades will be posted on December 22nd at 4:00 pm.  Questions or concerns about grades please reach out to your student’s Counselor or Administrator.
