Mr. Chris Maunu


Since Chris Maunu become director at Arvada West in 2006, the choir department has grown from 120 to over 300 members. Mr. Maunu was named a top-10 Finalist for the 2018, 2019, and 2021 GRAMMY Music Educator of the Year Award and winner of the 2019 and 2020 CMA National Music Teacher of Excellence Award. Under Maunu's direction, Arvada West has developed a reputation as one of the premiere high school choir programs in the United States. AWHS choirs have been invited to present Honor Performances at 12 National, Regional, and State ACDA and CMEA music conferences since 2009. Recent winners of the prestigious American Prize in Choral Performance, they are also the 9th American high school choir pro
gram in history to receive the invitation to perform in the Champions Competition of the World Choir Games, and earned the Gold Diploma at the Rimini International Choral Competition. They have toured nationally and internationally, including Carnegie Hall, Orchestra Hall in Chicago and Minneapolis, Washington, D.C.'s Kennedy Center, and High Mass at St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican in Rome. Chris has served as an honor choir and all state clinician in numerous states. He is the past High School Repertoire and Resources Chair for Colorado ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) and Vocal Music Council member of CMEA (Colorado Music Educators Association). Maunu has presented many clinics with both organizations and has nationally syndicated interviews with Chalkbeat, NAfME, and the Choralosophy Podcast. He is also a proponent of sharing the performances of AWHS online. Solo recording videos of Arvada West's choral ensembles have received over a million hits online and on social media platforms.
